Making Records

Write that you love me in pencil
the worth of the statement will always be in question
it will smudge and never endure
(I like the danger of that and
I like the wood and lead smells that stay the same when the page smell
has gone from new to old)

Write that you love me in pencil
let your fingers be the pencils and my body the page
I like the though of layers of you rubbing onto me to leave their mark
I ask only that you press hard
so the words can be read from the back of the page
tell my insides how you feel, not only my face

Write that you love me in pencil
  and receive a money-back guarantee
let fly with your eraser and you won't owe a thing
I'll take myself away at your request
leave you sitting, nibbling your pencil
rolling the ashen melted layers of you and me from your eraserhead

Write that you love me in pencil
I'm confident it will alarm you, make you
  hurry to write again
until my page is yellow and pitted from your point

Write that you love me in pencil
  I'll write in fountain pen
I am older than I look, my hands are dirty from
  leaping from bed to bed
I need to sign a contract before I grow older still:
I write that I love you in pen.
