Winter Nights

The window
is raised
only a fraction
or so
just enough to let in
a little of the winter air.

Otherwise
the heat
rising from our bed
would make the room
far too warm
to sleep in
as if
we had any intention
of sleeping.

What a face!
I say that very thing
and you
open mouthed
as if in shock
jaw distended
in mock indignation
brown eyes
shining
with laughter
all the while.

Don't throw the pillow
you know it's true.
or should I open
the window a bit more
just to hear
you squeal
before you need to
cuddle?

Still not sleeping..
