The Waiting Game

I must rein in my heart before you reign my life.

Your daily doses of attention have infected me
Slowing building up in my system until
I find myself addicted and euphoric.

You are ignorant of your own power.

You cannot know that each utterance you make
Means more to me than you ever intended to convey.
Each word is turned over and over
Every nuance wrung dry and scrutinized.

You are too freshly freed from a painful, prolonged match.

You long to linger in your newfound liberty.
It would be so unfair (and unfruitful) for me
To want/hope/expect anything more.

So.

I will play it light and airy
Dally a while, and hope for more.
Make no demands, give you space and time
To make up your own mind and heart on this score.

Ah, the rhymes begin! The one true sign
That we can be merry and (ha ha!) so bright!
Content to be your friend and your lover,
Joking through days, and lazing through nights.

And when you free your heart to care
I hope you'll find me already there.
