All In A Day's Drive

6:30 am, Entering the freeway -
There's the black cat!
Haven't seen him for two weeks.
Been watching him for months.
Now he sits amid major construction,
right off the 'on' ramp,
perky - as if he's had
his first cup of coffee,
just watching traffic go by.
What is it with this cat?
How is he still alive?

6:45 am, Exiting the freeway -
I drove past a caramel-colored cat,
dead, on the side of the road...
'sleeping' as my sensitive husband
would say.
Is this an omen?
Good or bad?

11:00 am, Entering the freeway -
Uneventful. Things are looking...
up?

11:40 am, Exiting after lunch -
A seven or eight year old boy
drives his bicycle
straight into the path
of a huge truck.
Truck swerves and misses.
I blow the horn
and shake my finger at
the boy, all the while
fighting back the tears
of fear.

4:05 pm, Heading home -
Two boys, maybe age ten,
poking the caramel-colored
dead cat with a stick.
Laughing and poking and laughing...
Should I honk? Stop? Yell?
Disturbed, I keep driving.

4:17 pm, Pulling into my garage,
I stop, rest my head
against the steering wheel.
I realize how thankful
that I am
to have you to come home to,
and add some romance to
this otherwise
bizarre day.
