He met you first, it's just as well you were too young for me then and I too old to teach you how to love me. So he took you as his girlfriend, his lover, his bride it was standing at his side when he lifted your veil that I was struck by the notion that I was standing at a station realizing suddenly that I had missed my train.... and forever. That you should have been mine I knew it too late made all the more bittersweet by secret longing. And when he let you down, I picked up the slack you cried on my shoulder and I made room for you in the confines of my heart. You came over me like a dream washes of light, of color of peace that radiated from inside you and fell over me. He balled his fist against your face and flattened you against a wall and in so doing he broke the spell that allowed me to be a bystander in love. I saw by your acceptance that this wasn't the first time, nor the worst I dispatched him from the house with a cracking in his jaw, and when he didn't come back, for days, then weeks, months, I was only too happy to take his place. |
