a halloween gothic

It wasn't the rain that chilled my bones, nor the howling of the wind through hollowed trees.   Perhaps it is your memory that chills me even more, the sudden coldness that doesn't leave until the sun awakens.   There are times when I crawl into bed, and feel your lips, your cold hard lips, against my skin.  Your icy breath, down my nightgown.  Is that you, where the air is trembling? Perhaps, it was just my nerves.

They say I walk in a fog,  not noticing where I am about to step.  Once, they stopped me, from walking over a cliff.  They said it was my heart following you.   Down into the raging waves below.   I dream of those waves at night, that had taken you from me.  From the cold algae intertwining your fingers; your eyes still wide with surprise.  Blue veins tracing your skin, where my fingers once had touched.  Your lips blue with cold, where once my lips could ignite a fire in you.

I cannot sleep at night, I walk the grounds of our home until the sun rises.  Hoping that one day, the sun will not rise, and you will come walking across the horizon.
With the moon, a halo in your hair, coming to take me down into the sea with you.  Down into the pounding waves, where our hearts can live together.

Tonight, the sea is in my nose.  I can smell the sharp salt scent, pungent against the burning incense and candles.  The memory of you is like a spear, piercing my thoughts.   I cannot imagine a life where you are not with me.  I would rather live beneath the waves, and swim toward your shining eyes, then here in the air where we cannot share a breath.  I shall follow you my darling, down into the darkness....down into the waiting coldness of the sea.

down, into the coldness, of the sea.
