a little touch of urban

sometimes i wait on the street for you.  while the night passes me by, in cars, in buses, in people walking on the sidewalk.  then at times, i'll turn my head and look for your car, to see if you have arrived yet.  in your little green car, that isn't quite green and isn't quite any other color either.  you pick me up right at dusk, and the streetlights haven't turned on yet, but the city lights are twinkling and glowing with a warmth you can't quite find anywhere but outside.  even in the midst of winter.

i smile when i think of you, awkwardly driving around an unfamiliar city, downtown at that, looking for the little short girl in the her blue peacoat.  i can tell you which one she is, she is the one with a grin a mile wide waiting for you on the corner of milwaukee st. and wisconsin ave.

there's a bookstore just a building down, and three stories tall, filled to the brim with old and used books.  the advertisement says "we make house calls".  sometimes i browse through there, and imagine which books you would read.  which one we would read in bed together.  then my fancy follows me out the door, empty handed, it's not as much fun picking out books without you.

then you come skidding along the street, in your little not quite green car with your head craned a few inches forward looking for me.  i see the nervousness on your face, with that energy that you are using looking for me.  then you are drawn to my grin, the inevitable grin that always crosses my face when i think of you.  the silly grin that comes across your face, when i touch it, just for fingers sake.  then you make your quick turn, just as your realize seconds ago where i am.  a horn blares at you as you pullover and open my door.  I get in, we kiss, hold hand, then pull away into traffic.
