Diamond Back Blues

He sat flippin' through picturebooks an' rememberin' times not long ago,
One thought o' her from they happiest days showed up, wouldn't you know.
Jus' like his recollection, th' picture showed smile o' a carefree soul,
He flipped it over, saw her words to him: "Two hearts, one common goal."
Feelin' tear form in 'is eye, he slid th' photograph back in its sleeve,
An' recline in th' chair, his mind grapplin' with why she have to leave.

If memory serve me, it said somewhere certain lines shouldn't be crossed.
'Cause sometimes history ain't written by the winners, but ones who lost.
Does a body no good to wonder 'bout the past when you can't live it twice,
Better to remind yourself of what you learn from it, heed your own advice.
Like readin' novel, make no sense to go back over pages you turned before,
Might as well move on to next chapter for whatever surprises are in store.

Settin' the album down, he stood up and retrieve his camera from its case,
Steadyin' his hand in front of him, he aimed, took a snapshot of his face.
Later on, he set newer image next to her in the book, inscribed with this:
"So that we always remain together, close enough to share one final kiss."
He stepped outside and look toward Heaven, raisin' one finger mighty high,
Two rings adorn it: One for him, one for his diamond back home in the sky.
