Miss Davenport

Her scars meant more than her pride, and day had come for Laura to leave,
A hastily written goodbye note, thirteen years of memories but to grieve.
But she was gonna change her life this time, no matter what she had to do,
Didn't care what got in her way, only thing she knew was this was through.
She looked at possibility with blackened eyes and smiled with busted teeth,
Last vestiges of an erstwhile husband now a memory she'd buried underneath.

Free at last from his abuse, she dedicated herself to find forgiving faces,
Feeling in her heart that her psyche would be repaired within newer places.
She landed in Key West, looking at the welcoming waters and glimmering sand,
And thought to herself that this was the place where people might understand.
At a local hotel to alight, she left her effects in her car while she slept,
Only when she awoke to broken glass did she see where a thief had crept.

Back in her former hometown, a buzz stirred amongst the locals to the news,
For a new Miss Davenport recently appeared, and most were wise to her ruse.
But noone seemed to care about her new clothes, fancy car and lavish taste,
Most were simply curious to how this impostor managed to afford such waste.
All that paled in comparison to the nerve such a woman must have possessed,
To deny involvement in her husband's death as lawmen place her under arrest.
