Memory of a Soldier

She cried tears of sorrow as her high-school sweetheart kissed her cheek and walked out the door.
He was on his way to Vietnam to fight in his first war.
Mary Jane watched the car,
As it went around the curve.
She stood an hour,
Maybe even more.

At first she got a letter every week.
Then, maybe every three or four.

Her friends tried to help,
But they just didn't understand.
They have never had the intimate relationship that she has.
He can read her mind,
And dry her tears,
When family life
Gives her fears.

Though they are both virgins,
They have the love of a lifetime.
Best friends for life,
Lovers for an eternity.

She got a phone call today,
Tears welled up when she heard his voice on the other line,
He was okay,
And doing well.
The fighting was almost over
And he would be home soon.
Well he had to leave,
But he loved her
And she loved him too.
Then he was gone.

So the days went by,
The other soldiers were coming back to town.
Then one day Mary Jane received a letter.
It told her of the death
Of John R. Dean,
Her beautiful soldier,
That left her for war.

She dried rivers of tears,
And stayed inside for days.
She wanted to no one to see her
Except for her John.

As she grew, she became quiet,
Lonesome girl.
The only thing she thought about
Was what she could have had.
The marriage, and the children that would never come.

She died a spinster at the age of 78,
And she was buried next to the stone
That read Soldier J.R.D., Jr.
They were lovers for eternity,
Laying next to each other forever.

Her life was changed forever
At the age of seventeen.
