The Fledgling

How does the fledgling dare
to take the first step into air
And leave the warmth of kin and nest
The comfort of her mother's breast?

How does the fledgling trust
That she will not land in the dust
and fail to make her first assent
and die too quickly, wishes spent?

How does the fledgling soar
on downy wings that seem too poor
to carry her beyond her home
and let her freely, wildly roam?

How can this fledgling, small and frail
Leap without the fear to fail?
Please fledgling, speak from up above
And tell me how to dare to love.
