House

we play house
we play Big People
we cut up peppers
pasilla/serrano/green chile/jalapeno
we cut up red potatoes
we cut up a clove of garlic
we cut up a red onion
we make a big pot
of chicken green chile stew
you work on your novel
I work on my poetry
you stay in bed recuperating
watching baseball games
and the History Channel
I drive to town cursing
looking for parking spaces
and braving the mindless crowds
with a wobbly shopping cart

there is no plastic
no cellophane
no hollow
no strawberry
to our hearts
our hearts are not toys
our hearts are not candy
our hearts mean business
our hearts are giants
our hearts do not
mess around

but there is
no house
no backyard
no doggie
no baby makes three
just you and me living
this small silly life
in the biggest greatest
way we know.
