brian eno and desert night

"music is heaven"
said thomas campion
i wonder
did queen elizabeth know?
as she grooved to his tunes
in gilded palaces lit by fire
below which
the rest of the known world
lived
lives quite far
from heaven
because there were clothes to
wash fields to plow carts to
pull stock to feed work to do
children to nurse bread to
leaven candles to light
(you are heaven)

i can't remember when it last
rained here
some days i think all that's
not firmly tied down
attached
will just blow away
with the rest of this city's
dust
picturesque postcard poverty
colorful rust
mi nuevo mexico
i trust
we'll someday all be mexicans
again
arizona will become a golf
course
texas will secede
(praise je-
sus)
and everyone will forget
she ever existed
in the first place
the lying war crime faces
the best intentions twisted
like our leaders
suddenly like the memory
of a twister from six springs
past

so on this night
i can see the flashing red
transmission tower on sandia
crest
some five thousand feet up
in this heavy cold air that's
settled on our heads
and you're asleep
in there
and for one second maybe
i'm aware
of the irreplaceable moments
that comprise this life this
minute this hour
this polyphony of our days
radiant and without fear
sung as brightly as boldly as
we can manage
while we're still
here
